Note: Your 'bankroll' is usually the amount you take to the casino for all gambling expenses. But when playing roulette online, this is just the balance you have to play with.
What is a unit?
A betting unit is a set amount that you bet with on each spin of the roulette wheel.
For example, if you have a bankroll of $100 to play with, you might choose to use $2 as your default betting unit.
In other words, a unit is a constant that you stick with throughout a session to ensure that you can spend an optimum amount of time at the wheel, whilst still giving yourself an opportunity to win a decent amount of money if you hit a lucky streak.
It's a way of giving yourself a solid base to play from so you'll know if you're getting carried away.
Why else do we use units?
Because some types of bets require multiple chips to make, and this allows us to compare their cost.
For example, the voisins du zero call bet covers a specific section of the wheel around the zero. To cover all 17 numbers you need to place a variety of straight and split bets on the table, and this particular bet requires 9 units in total.
In other words, a unit allows us to compare how much different types of bets cost relative to one another. So when you're playing you'll know that making a neighbours bet will cost you 5 units, whereas the snake will cost you 12 units. One bet is more expensive to make than the other.
Again, units just help you to manage your bankroll when placing different types of bets during your session.
Popular bets
- Red/Black = 1 unit
- Single Number = 1 unit
- Voisins du Zero = 9 units
- Jeu Zero = 4 units
- Tiers du Cylindre = 6 units
- Orphelins = 5 units
- Neighbours = 5 units
- Final = 3-4 units
- Snake = 12 units
Finding your ideal betting unit
The calculator should give you a rough idea of the ideal range of units that you should bet with at the roulette table. However, at the end of the day the amount that you decide to bet with on each spin is completely up to you.
Some people will want to be cautious with their money and will be content with betting a relatively small amount, whereas others will seek the thrill and excitement that a potential big win can bring.
If you are the type of player that likes to bet big and go for the big win, you have to be more vigilant with your betting to ensure that you do not lose more money than you are comfortable with.
If you feel yourself getting carried away, try and bring down your betting units as much as possible and keep them steady. Think of it as a form of strength training where you're building up your internal power of will. The last thing you want is to get frustrated and bet too much when you hit an unlucky streak.
Warning: If you become nervous when the ball is in motion and you feel your heart sink every time you lose on a spin, you are betting with too much money and need to walk away.
