- Bucs’ odds to win Super Bowl 55 improve from +6600 in January to +1500 today
- Patriots still at +1600 despite losing Tom Brady to Buccaneers
- Reigning Super Bowl champion Chiefs still odds-on favorites (+650)
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are one of the least successful franchises in NFL history. By many measures, they are the least successful. The Buccaneers have a winning percentage of just under 39 percent since entering the NFL in the 1970s, which is easily the worst mark of all 32 teams. In fact, they’re the only team in the league with a winning percentage south of 42 percent.
The Bucs do have a Super Bowl title to their name, but they’re currently in the midst of the league’s longest playoff drought. Tampa Bay hasn’t been seen in a playoff game since falling at the hands of the New York Giants in the 2007 Wild Card round.
If oddsmakers are to be believed, though, the 2020 Buccaneers could be among the league’s best teams. That’s due in no small part to reports that Tom Brady, who announced on Tuesday that he would not be returning to the New England Patriots next season, is expected to sign with Tampa Bay.
While there has been speculation that Brady would be leaving the Patriots, it was still somewhat shocking to see it come to fruition. It will be extra weird to see Brady, who has spent his entire 20-year NFL career with the same team, donning the Bucs’ pewter jerseys starting later this year.
Bucs’ Super Bowl Odds Skyrocket
The expected addition of Brady has instantly done wonders for the Bucs’ Super Bowl 55 odds. Tampa Bay has shot up to +1500 to win next year’s championship at Bovada, which gives Tampa Bay the fifth-best odds of any team. The updated odds are below:
Team | Odds at Bovada |
Kansas City Chiefs | +650 |
Baltimore Ravens | +750 |
San Francisco 49ers | +750 |
New Orleans Saints | +1200 |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers | +1500 |
New England Patriots | +1600 |
Green Bay Packers | +1600 |
Seattle Seahawks | +1600 |
Dallas Cowboys | +1800 |
Philadelphia Eagles | +2000 |
Buffalo Bills | +2000 |
The Bucs went 7-9 last season with Jameis Winston leading the offense. Winston is a free agent, and given the Brady news it’s safe to say the former No. 1 overall pick will be landing with a new team some time soon. When he does sign, Winston will become the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era to switch teams one season after leading the NFL in passing yards.
While Winston did put up some prolific numbers in 2019 (5,109 passing yards, 33 touchdowns), taking care of the football was an issue. Winston led the league with 30 interceptions, which was one of the highest single-season totals in NFL history. Winston’s 30 picks were the most by any quarterback in a season since Brett Favre was picked off 29 times in 2005.
Obviously, Brady should help the Bucs cut down on the turnovers. The fact that they managed to win 7 games a season ago despite constantly having drives eliminated by untimely interceptions shows the good amount of talent already on the roster. Brady will team up with Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and OJ Howard to form one of the most formidable passing attacks in football.

Tom Brady has 5 times as many playoff wins, 6 times as many Super Bowl wins and 7 times as many 30-TD seasons as all the Buccaneers’ QBs in the team’s history.

Could the Bucs Play a Home Game in Super Bowl 55?
It’s interesting to see Brady’s former team, the Patriots, checking in with solid +1600 odds to win Super Bowl 55. As it stands today, the only quarterbacks on New England’s active roster are Jarrett Stidham and Cody Kessler. Given the fact that the rest of the roster is built to win now, one would imagine Bill Belichick and co. will wind up signing or trading for one of the many veteran QBs still available. Winston, Cam Newton and Andy Dalton are some of the experienced passers still available.
It’s also worth noting that Super Bowl 55 will take place at the Bucs’ home stadium in Tampa. No team in NFL history has ever played in its home stadium for a Super Bowl. Needless to say, there’s a chance that could change now that Brady has a chance to become the first QB to ever accomplish the feat.
When betting lines for Super Bowl 55 were first set back in January, Tampa Bay checked in way down at +6600. As recently as this week, you could still have gotten the Bucs around +4700 to win next year’s title. The odds have slowly been trending in this direction in recent days until finally moving to +1500 once the Brady news became all-but official.
The fact that the Bucs share a division with the Saints makes their path to a division title a rocky one, but I’m optimistic that this team can live up to expectations next season. The newfound hype feels a little bit like the massive optimism we saw surrounding the Cleveland Browns a year ago at this time, but Tampa Bay has a more experienced coaching staff in place. Adding Brady, who has done nothing but win for 20 straight years, can’t hurt, either.
This is a win-now type of move, so I think there is value to be had in the Bucs’ current +1500 odds. There’s a decent chance this is the longest they’ll be for quite a while, so jump on this bet while you still can.
